Frozen pineapple chunks: Pineapple adds the perfect amount of sweetness to this smoothie. Make sure you use frozen for that thick and icy texture.
Romaine leaves: I like to use romaine as a leafy green in many of my smoothies. The taste blends well with fruit and isn’t overpowering.
Frozen banana: Frozen banana adds some thickness to this smoothie and helps create a creamy texture.
Milk of choice: Use a plant-based milk if you want this smoothie to be dairy-free or vegan. Any milk should work well as long as it doesn’t have an overpowering taste.
Chia seeds: Chia seeds are the perfect addition to any smoothie for added benefits such as plant-based protein and omega 3s.
Tips for making this pineapple green smoothie
Use frozen fruit. Using frozen fruit gives your smoothie a thick and icy texture.
Pre-chop your banana. This isn’t necessary, but if you make smoothies with frozen bananas often, I suggest peeling and chopping them before freezing. I like to chop each banana into 2-4 pieces before freezing between layers of parchment paper.
This will be especially helpful if you do not have a high-powered blender. Your banana pieces will be ready to toss into your blender and will blend much more easily.
Make sure you blend the chia seeds. Some people like to just mix chia seeds without blending, but this does not yield a very nice texture. I recommend blending them to create a smooth texture.
Start with a bit less milk if you like your smoothie thick. You can slowly add more milk until you achieve your desired thickness.
Adjustments and substitutions
Use any type of milk you like. Use plant-based milk if you want your smoothie to be dairy-free or vegan. You could even use water if you want to reduce the calories.
You can omit the chia seeds. If you don’t have chia seeds or just don't want to use them in this smoothie, you can simply leave them out.
Add more lettuce if you don’t mind the taste. I think 3 romaine leaves is plenty for this smoothie, but if you want more and you can handle the taste, go for it! Try it with 3 leaves first, then add more if you’d like. The amount you use will also depend on the size of your romaine leaves.
